A
seasoned human right activist based in Ilorin, Kwara state capital, barrister Muritala Sambo has hinted that every electorate deserve to know every steps taken by the government in a democratic dispensation.

Barrister Sambo gave the hint while featuring on a public accountability radio programme in the state, following a resolution by the state’s house of assembly imploring National Broadcasting  Commission NBC to stop partisan political programmes on all radio stations in the state.

He noted that when the masses failed to be informed by the government, therefore, the masses should not be stopped from insinuating their activities.

“When you have the power to vote people in, then you should be given the power to question their actions”

Barrister Sambo who described every government in power as servants to the public whom the masses have sent on an errand said it is mandatory for them to deliver the message to the masses, but the situation where the message is not well delivered, government must be tackled to answer questions, hence the need for the opposition parties to criticize what they can defend.

While speaking on the importance of the opposition in democracy as the life wire of government, the human right activist stressed that democracy can never grow if the incumbent fail to allow the opposition criticize them or fail to allow independent opinion to work out.

“When the majority is having their way, minority must not be foreclosed having their say”

He advised government to always look critically into whatever the opposition pointed out and work on them diligently.

The lawyer also commended the state government for the rapid development being recently experienced in some parts of the state as a result of the opposition’s effort, noted that government can function well if the opposition continue criticizing constructively which would later be the benefit of the masses.
