REGULAR SEX IN OLD AGE IMPROVES VOCABULARY, VISUAL AWARENESS- HAYLEY WRIGHT

O
lder people can boost their brain power by having more sex, research reveals. Regularly getting intimate improves the over-50s’ vocabulary and visual awareness, a study found.

Yet, being active between the sheets does not influence their attention or memory, the research adds.Researchers did not speculate on why regular sex boosts older people’s brain function, however, previous research suggests getting intimate stimulates areas of the brain associated with learning.

Study author Dr. Hayley Wright from Coventry University said: “People don’t like to think that older people have sex, but we need to challenge this conception at a societal level and look at what impact sexual activity can have on those aged 50 and over, beyond the known effects on sexual health and general wellbeing.” Researchers from the universities of Coventry and Oxford analyzed 28 men and 45 women between the ages of 50 and 83.

The participants completed a questionnaire about their sexual activity over the past year. They then took part in a test that measures brain function in older adults. This included a ‘verbal fluency test’, which required the participants to name as many animals as they could in one minute.

They then had to say as many words beginning with ‘F’ as they could. Their visual awareness was also assessed as they were required to copy a complex design and draw a clock face from memory.

Results revealed that those who have more sex did better in the verbal fluency test. They were also more able to perceive objects and the spaces between them. Yet, regular sex had no impact on attention or memory. The researchers did not speculate on how regular sex boosts the brain function of older people.

Yet, previous research from scientists at McGill University in Canada revealed fornicating stimulates the development of neurones in the area of the brain associated with learning. Neurones send messages to other cells in the nervous system.

Wright said: “We can only speculate whether this is driven by social or physical elements, but an area we would like to research further is the biological mechanisms that may influence this.

“Every time we do another piece of research we are getting a little bit closer to understanding why this association exists at all, what the underlying mechanisms are, and whether there is a ‘cause and effect” relationship between sexual activity and cognitive function in older people.

“People don’t like to think that older people have sex, but we need to challenge this conception at a societal level and look at what impact sexual activity can have on those aged 50 and over, beyond the known effects on sexual health and general well-being.”

POOR SLEEP CAUSES HEART ATTACK, STROKE, LOWER BONE FORMATION

S

cientists have associated sleeplessness (insomnia) with increased risk of heart attack, stroke and lower bone formation. They also found that dozing for less than 30 minutes in afternoon and eating peanuts improve sense of well-being and prevent heart attack and stroke.

The first study published was March 31, 2017, in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

First author and a Master’s degree student at China Medical University, Shenyang, China, Qiao He, said: “Sleep is important for biological recovery and takes around a third of our lifetime, but in modern society more and more people complain of insomnia. For example, it is reported that approximately one-third of the general population in Germany has suffered from insomnia symptoms.

“Researchers have found associations between insomnia and poor health outcomes. But the links between insomnia and heart disease or stroke have been inconsistent.”

The current meta-analysis assessed the association between insomnia symptoms and incidence or death from cardiovascular disease (acute myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, heart failure), stroke, or a combination of events. Insomnia symptoms included difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early-morning awakening, and non-restorative sleep.

Also, results of a new study presented Saturday at the Endocrine Society’s 99th annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, United States, showed that insufficient sleep, a common problem that has been linked to chronic disease risk, might also be an unrecognized risk factor for bone loss.

The study investigators found that healthy men had reduced levels of a marker of bone formation in their blood after three weeks of cumulative sleep restriction and circadian disruption, similar to that seen in jet lag or shift work, while a biological marker of bone resorption, or breakdown, was unchanged.

Also, research suggests that the secret of happiness could be as simple as having a quick snooze in the daytime.

A study found that taking naps of less than 30 minutes improves our sense of well-being, as well as boosting performance.

The researchers have suggested a new word to describe the contented feeling after a brief doze: ‘nappiness’.

Prof. Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, said: “Previous research has shown that naps of under 30 minutes make you more focused, productive and creative, and these new findings suggest … that you can also become happier by just taking a short nap.”

GLAUCOMA CAN POSSIBLY CAUSE BAD DRIVING—EXPERT

A

n eye expert, Dr Olutoke Ayorinde has cautioned Nigerians to be wary of drivers that continually experience minor damages resulting from accidents on one side of their vehicles, saying such drivers may actually be on the way to becoming blind due to glaucoma.

Dr Ayorinde, a consultant community ophthalmologist, stated this during this year’s World Glaucoma Day celebration at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State and free eye screening exercise.

According to her, a significant loss in side vision due to glaucoma may account for such accidents, particularly when one side of the vehicle is most often affected.

The eye expert, noting that glaucoma was the second most common cause of blindness in the world, stated that the eye problem initially does not give any symptom.

According to her, “central vision is the last thing to be affected, that is what is seen directly. Before then, the side vision would have gone.”

Dr Ayorinde, describing glaucoma as a preventable and treatable cause of irreversible blindness, stated that people most at risk of developing the eye condition includes people of black origin, with high intraocular pressure (IOP), family history of blindness, older people and those that had experienced eye injury in the past.

In addition, she stated that smoking, use of alcohol and diseases like diabetes may also worsen the eye problem.

Glaucoma, a silent thief of sight, she said is increasingly now diagnosed in young Nigerians, a situation she said calls for people to be more proactive about their eye health.

“It is not that glaucoma in the younger patients is different, but the rate at which blindness can result from it is faster. So instead of getting to the dead end, why do not you pick it early, do something about it and ensure that your vision is kept for long,” she declared.
The expert, who remarked that blindness should not be a sign of ageing as many presumed, stated “this week we wanted to create the awareness that glaucoma is here with us, that blindness from it is preventable and that it is a treatable disease.

While stressing the need for regular eye tests, she urged people not to change  their prescription glasses without a prior eye test to ensure early detection of eye problems like glaucoma.

Ayorinde also cautioned against patronising road side opticians, saying a detailed eye examination should not be just asking to read and trying on some lenses.

“Glaucoma is not reversible, but its early detection and proper management prevents this blindness and this indeed can save a lot of fortune,” she concluded.

FOOD SCIENTISTS, TECHNOLOGISTS ENDORSE FANTA, SPRITE

F
ood Scientists and Technologists under the auspices of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, NIFST, yesterday lent its support to the Federal Ministry of Health’s endorsement of the Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC, products, Fanta and Sprite.

In a statement made available to newsmen and jointly signed by the National President, Dr. Dahiru Adamu and the Vice President, Mr. E. Oluwole Toye, the food scientists noted that as an informed stakeholder on the subject matter, the Institute is aware that the science of benzene formation from interaction between benzoic acid and ascorbic acid is based on the provision of specific conditions such as presence of ultra violet light and high temperature of about 60degrees Celsius.

They argued that science is fact based and there has not been any reported incidence or that these two conditions are prevalent in the Nigerian environment.

TIPS ON HOW TO PLEASURE A WOMAN: 16 MOVES THAT’LL TURN HER ON EVERY TIME

It’s obvious that men and women are different, but women aren’t as complicated as men think they are. So, here’s how to pleasure a woman.

When it comes to knowing how to pleasure a woman and turn her on, men think about how they like being turned on, and then apply it. But the thing is, we’re different. If we had Pen.!ses, sure, then we would get turned on by d.!ck pics and text messages that start with, “heyyy.” However, that’s not the case, fellas.

How to pleasure a woman – 16 moves that would appeal to almost all women

Before you read any further, you should know that every woman is different. However, there are general acts which would turn most women on.

So, if you try something from this list and it isn’t doing the trick, you keep moving forward and try something else. You’ll hit the spot, it just may take a couple tries. If you pay attention, this will be a breeze. Here’s how to pleasure a woman.

#1 Be yourself in bed. I know you want to look like a man in bed, and trust me, you are. But don’t force it. Don’t focus on trying to impress her, but instead just focus on the moment.

If you’re spending too much time trying to impress her, then you move the attention away from pleasuring her and turn it into an ego thing. It’s S3@.x:’, not a competition.

#2 Don’t play the guessing game. Sure, you can spend some time figuring out what she’s into – nibbling her earlobes, licking her neck… that’s all fine and dandy. But if you’re not getting a response, then just ask her straight up what turns her on. That way, you cut through all the crap and can focus on pleasing her.

#3 Take it up a notch with foreplay. Focus the majority of your time on foreplay. The S3@.x:’ is going to happen eventually, but what really turns women on is foreplay. We love kissing, touch, licking, and biting. It’s sensual and it gets us going. Many men jump past this, but it’s crucial if you want the S3@.x:’ to be passionate and, well, wet.

#4 Don’t rush. If you want to know how to pleasure a woman, for God’s sake, take your time. There’s really no need to rush, unless you’re having a quickie. So, just enjoy the moment. Learn your partner’s body and just have fun exploring it. I mean, you’re already N@kkd with them, so you might as well take it all in.

#5 Switch up the routine. Don’t be shy trying out new things. In fact, we appreciate it when you want to try new things. Sometimes, it won’t work, but the point is that you’re not stuck in the 1,2,3 S3@.x:’ routine which makes us pass out midway through S3@.x:’.

#6 Don’t focus on just one body part. Men love bre@.$ts and V@.g!na. I completely understand that. However, women have so many erogenous zones that get ignored in the meantime. Not every woman gets turned on when you play with their bre@.$ts. Instead, they may be turned on when you lick or kiss their neck instead. You need to explore this

#7 Know what hits the G-spot. We all have a G-spot. however, for men and women, it’s slightly different. The best position to reach her G-spot is doggy style. While doing doggy, put your hand on her clitoris and rub it… that’ll get her going.

#8 Don’t forget about kissing. I know it’s all hot and sweaty and you’re focusing on having S3@.x:’, but kissing is very much a part of it. Women love kissing during S3@.x:’ because it makes us feel more connected and wanted by our partners. So, kiss, kiss, kiss.

#9 Go down on her. Dear God, just do it… if you REALLY want to know how to pleasure a woman. We go down on you guys, so I’m not sure what the problem is. We even swallow your cum, so, get over it. Some men have such a phobia of it, but it gives us so much pleasure. I recommend the “figure 8” technique – it’s pretty self-explanatory.

#10 Be slightly aggressive. Women love men who take what they want. So, be a little aggressive. If you’re worried about how aggressive you are, pull her hair lightly or smack her ass. She’ll let you know if she wants more or less. So, just test her comfort level and how much aggression turns her on.

#11 Know your female anatomy. If you want to go down on her, you best know where the clitoris is. Or else you’ll be doing, well, I don’t know what you’ll be doing down there and neither will she. Google it, watch some P@.rn, whatever you have to do to educate yourself… just do it.

#12 Don’t forget the anus. People are so uncomfortable about the anus, however, that’s where hundreds of nerve endings are, so lemme tell ya, it feels good to have somebody down there. As long as they’re clean, you should have no problem with exploring that part of the body.

#13 Start turning her on way before the bedroom. Don’t just wait until the music turns on and the lights dim down for you to start turning her on. Man, start that way in advance. Get the dirty texts going while she’s at work, grab her ass while she’s walking through the front door. Women need some time to get turned on, so get her worked up earlier in the day.

#14 Compliment her. We want to feel desired. I mean, I think everyone wants to feel desired. It’s what we all strive for. So, while having S3@.x:’ with her, compliment her. Now, don’t overdo it, we can tell when it becomes disingenuous. But in that moment, if you think she looks beautiful, say it.

#15 ExerciseIf you’re worried about your stamina, then start working out. Get that blood pumping and your cardiovascular system going so that you don’t have that fear when it’s time to have S3@.x:’. You need to take care of yourself. Plus, women get turned on when we see a sweaty guy at the gym.

#16 Don’t focus on your org@.$mOkay, S3@.x:’ is about you, but it’s also about her. So, don’t focus so much on your d.!ck. So many guys just focus on pleasing themselves, and in the meantime, they totally ignore the woman’s needs. It’s not always about you, so share the pleasure.

So now that you know how to pleasure a woman and what turns us on, it’s time that you start putting these tips to use. The sooner you start, the better.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

A
head of the World Kidney Day tomorrow, March 10, 2017, scientists have identified diabetes and high blood pressure as the leading causes of poor kidney health, which in turn are caused by a poor diet, lifestyle and obesity.

Several studies recommend that the only real long-term solution to kidney disease is to drink more clean water, get more exercise and, most importantly, to reject processed and unhealthy foods in favour of natural whole foods.

Also, researchers have identified foods that can treat kidney disease and boost renal function. Top on the list is garlic, ginger and watermelon.

How garlic, ginger, onions, others prevent renal damage
Researchers have found that eating meals rich in ginger (Zingiber officinale), onion (Allium cepa) and garlic (Allium sativum) could be the novel preventive and therapeutic diet or drug against the menace.

A recent study published in Journal of Renal Nutrition concluded: “This study concludes that alcohol-induced nephro-toxicity was attenuated by ginger extract treatment, thus ginger can be used as a regular nutrient to protect the renal cells.”

The study investigated the nephro-protective effect of ginger against chronic alcohol-induced oxidative stress and tissue damage. Results of another study published in World Journal of Life Science and Medical Research revealed that Allium cepa has renal protective effects in diabetic rabbits.

Another study published in Science Alert concluded: “This study shows that cadmium induces nephrotoxicity by impairing renal functions and stimulating lipid peroxidation. Pre-treatment and post-treatment of onion extract in cadmium-treated rats produced mild protective potentials.

However, co-treatment with onion extract during cadmium administration showed significant antioxidative potentials in preventing cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity.”

Meanwhile, results of an animal study published in Food Chemistry found that ginger could help protect against kidney damage, a condition said to threaten one in three diabetics.

The new study assessed the effects of ginger on the blood antioxidant levels and kidney health of diabetic rat models. One study published in Pharmacological Reports in 2008 discovered that garlic could significantly reduce kidney damage associated with mercury chloride exposure in laboratory animals (mercury chloride is a potential carcinogen used in disinfectants, batteries, insecticides and many other products to which humans are regularly exposed).

Another study, published in Food and Chemical Toxicology in 2001, found that garlic in low doses could enhance the antioxidant status of the kidneys, thus protecting them from the cell-damaging effects of free radicals.

WATERMELON
There are three reasons why watermelons are good for treating kidney disease. Firstly, they are low in potassium and phosphorus, which are two minerals that dysfunctional kidneys can have problems balancing. Secondly, they are comprised of approximately 92 percent alkaline water, which helps flush the urinary system of accumulated toxins (watermelon fasts can even dissolve kidney stones). Lastly, they help the liver to process ammonia and deliver it to urea, thus easing the strain on the kidneys while ridding the body of excess fluids. Unlike garlic, watermelon is high in natural sugars. For this reason, people with diabetes-sourced kidney disease should be careful not to consume too much of it on a regular basis.

PAWPAW SEEDS offer protection against kidney damage
Nigerian researchers claim that seed extracts of unripe mature fruits of pawpaw (Carica papaya) can protect the kidneys from damage and could offer hope for the treatment of poison-related kidney (renal) diseases.

The study was published in Biology and Medicine.

The researchers concluded: “It is proposed that the nephroprotective activities of the aqueous seed extract of the unripe, mature fruits of Carica papaya in carbon tetrachloride-induced nephrotoxicity may involve its antioxidant and/or oxidative free radical scavenging activities.

“Also, the results of this study have confirmed the rationale for the folkloric use of the aqueous seed extract of Carica papaya in the treatment of poison-related renal disorders.”

Also, among the Yoruba herbalists, hot infusion of the seeds of the unripe, mature fruits of Carica papaya is employed in the local treatment of poison related renal and hepatic disorders.

ZOBO reduces diabetes-induced kidney disease risk
Results of a recent study suggest that aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HSE) has no harmful effect on the liver but when consumed in high doses could be harmful to the kidney.

Commonly called zobo or roselle in Nigeria, Hibiscus sabdariffa belongs to the plant family malvaceae. Another study found that Hibiscus sabdariffa might help treat kidney stones via uricosuric activity. Uricosuric agents are used to lower the uric acid level in the blood and to prevent the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints and kidneys.

These drugs are often used to treat gout, a disease in which uric acid crystals deposit in joints and cause pain. By decreasing plasma uric acid levels, these drugs decrease the deposition of crystals in joints, eventually decreasing inflammation and thereby reducing the pain of gout.

The study authors concluded that roselle has a uricosuric effect and they suggested that the chemical constituents exerting this effect should be identified.

PLANTAIN EXTRACT boosts kidney health, sexual functions in men.

A meal of unripe plantain with local spices like cloves, onions, garlic and ginger could be the answer to erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, ulcer, kidney problems, diabetes, and high blood pressure. According to “Medicinal Uses of Fruits and Vegetables” written by Mr. Olalekan Jagun, unripe plantain contains special dietary fibre called pectin, which increases the number of calories ingested thus can shed weight or treat obesity.

Plantain is also recommended for the treatment of urinary stones. The stem juices of plantain (Musa paradisiaca) have been reported for dissolving pre-formed stones and in preventing the formation of stones in the urinary bladder of rats. Stem juice is also used in nervous affectations like epilepsy, hysteria and in dysentery and diarrhoea. Several oligosaccharides comprising fructose, xylose, galactose, glucose and mannose occur naturally in plantain, making it an excellent prebiotic for the selective growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine.

YOU CAN BE HAPPY, EVEN WITH SMALL PENIS

F
or the average man, the desire is to have a towering manhood that’ll be the talk of the town among women.

Indeed, sexologists say many men are convinced that anything short of a six-inch pack at placid stage is baby stuff.

The average penis size is said to be 3.5 inches when flaccid, and 5.1 inches when erect.

Of course, a man’s part is not expected to be short or tiny, but a few categories of men are born with small penis nevertheless; and since there’s hardly any way out, the best way forward is to be happy with your shorty.

How to go about it? This way…

Laugh at jokes about small penis size — it relieves you of the tension.

• Honour thy little dick. Confidence starts by daring to love yourself even if you think others don’t. So, go ahead, give that little guy a hug.

• You are not alone. The question of penis size abounds with statistics. We’re told that 68 per cent of men are between 4.5 and six inches; whereas half of the rest of us 16 per cent boast less than 4.5in. But, hang on, 16 per cent is quite a lot, really.

That’s one in six. This means that, if you’re packing a four-incher in a group of a dozen men, then you’re not the only one.

• Explore, experiment, discover. A lot of guys with size anxiety get fed up with advice to use toys or try anal sex. It’s like they’re being relegated to second place. Yet, great sex is exploration, wherever it takes you.

• Your manhood is not a weapon. Men who bemoan their penis size often complain they can’t hope to make a partner scream during sex – as if what they wish for is a meaty bludgeon to batter their partner with.

Trust me, your partner will prefer screams to be the result of a breaking orgasm, not a broken pelvis.

• Avoid penis enlargement scams. If you want to enlarge your penis, you can stretch it till it snaps, perforate it like a teabag or pop some blood vessels with a pump… the options are near endless. However, there are too many scams out there.

• Don’t covet your neighbour’s cock. The first penis transplant was big news, but what is less known is that the recipient asked for the procedure to be reversed after 15 days. For all the turmoil a small penis can cause, the underlying problem is rarely the size of the willy. Irrespective of the question, a big penis is not the answer.

• Despite everything, small cock rocks! You’d better believe this: there are plenty of good things about little dicks. They stand to attention very quickly. They are less likely to fall mid-mission. They cause less alarm when popping up at inopportune moments. Going ‘all in’ causes less gagging. Your willy may be small, yet the list of benefits is surprisingly long.

• Don’t listen to small dick shaming. One of the biggest attacks is the claim that bad men have small dicks, because a small dick makes you a bad man. Some small dicked guys are bad, angry men. Yet not because they were born with a small dick, but as they’ve been shamed by others all their lives.

• In reality, size does not matter. Truly, this claim is too simplistic, but, clearly, it’s all you own. Live with it!

NEW AIDS VACCINE ‘CURES’ FIVE PATIENTS, REPORT CLAIMS

T
hree weeks after Prof. Maduike Ezeibe of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Abia State claimed to have discovered a cure for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), Spanish scientists over the weekend said five patients living with the disease are virus-free seven months after taking a new vaccine.

According to a study published in New Scientist but first reported by DailyMailUK Online, the treatment, developed by researchers in Spain, allowed the patients to stop taking regular antiretroviral (ARV) drugs – the current method of suppressing HIV.

Scientists have yet to test the results in a large-scale clinical trial, but they say the vaccine may be a “functional cure.”

It is the first step towards success in a field that has failed to find a vaccine in the last 30 years.

Dr. Beatriz Mothe, from the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain, said: “It’s the proof of concept that through therapeutic vaccination we can really re-educate our T cells to control the virus. This is the first time that we see this is possible in humans.”

Mothe and her colleagues used an HIV vaccine made by Professor Tomáš Hanke from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom (UK).

The study included 13 participants, who had taken ARVs for a little over three years on average – all within six months of being infected.

After four weeks, eight of the patients saw the virus rebound. But the other five patients have gone six to 28 weeks without having to restart the treatment.

The virus became temporarily undetectable, but it has never gone above 2,000 copies per milliliter, which is the criterion to restart treatment.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, told The Guardian yesterday that there is no cure for HIV/AIDS as claimed by Ezeibe. “No, there is no cure for HIV. It is important that we do not deceive our people.

There is no cure for HIV. However, treatment is available that allows those infected to live healthy and productive lives. We encourage everyone to get tested, know their HIV status and if positive, get treatment in one of many centres in Nigeria. Treatment is free,” he said.

Ihekweazu said NCDC wants to avoid giving false hope to patients who may now abandon their Anti Retro Viral (ARVs) drugs thus leading to an increase in prevalence and mortality from the disease. He said the agency also does not want a situation where the trust of partners and donors in the country’s health system is lost.

How about the claim of HIV cure by Prof. Ezeibe? The NCDC boss said: “Science is universal and there is no place for sentiments when it comes to science. While I would love for this breakthrough to come from Nigeria, there should be no emotional considerations in assessing the validity of scientific evidence.

CHEWING GUM, BREAD LEAVES BODY MORE VULNERABLE TO INFECTIONS, RESEARCHERS FIND

S
cientists claim that chewing gum and bread could be bad for your health, a new study reveals. Long-term exposure to a popular food additive leaves the body more prone to infections.

The research suggests that Titanium dioxide, found in a variety of foods as E171, damages cell structures inside the intestines; and not only does this allow for more harmful bacteria to enter the digestive system, but it prevents some nutrients from being absorbed.

Researchers exposed a small intestinal cell model to the equivalent of a meal’s worth of titanium oxide nanoparticles over four hours.

They also tested the same model with three meal’s worth over five days – deemed chronic exposure.

But only those who had been repeatedly given the additive had any negative effects, according to the study by Binghamton University.

Chronic exposure was found to have an effect on the ability of intestinal cells called microvilli – designed to help absorb nutrients.

HAMMATAN: WHAT YOU MUST DO OTHERWISE… – EXPERT

Dr Uche Ukwor, Senior Registrar, Department of Paediatrics, Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, has advised the public to maintain proper hygiene and adopt healthy lifestyle to avoid contracting diseases associated with Hammatan season.

The medical expert gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Abakaliki on Thursday.

Ukwor said that apart from climate change and untidy environment, Hammatan season exposed people to cold, cough, sinunsis and catarrh with other diseases of the lungs. “I want to advise the people to practice good personal hygiene and maintain proper hand washing to break the chain of transmission. “Symptoms can come as cold, body pain, running nose, fever with others signs, but one is advised to see a doctor immediately to take proper test, examination and diagnosis with treatment, “he said.

He also called on the people, who are allergic to dust and cold to ensure adequate protection and cautioned them self medication.

The medical practitioner stressed that self medication posed serious health problems to the public.
